The Human Resources department is responsible for corporate staffing, benefits management and administration, career development and training, employee communications, salary administration, recordkeeping, stock option plan administration and other areas related to the health and well-being of Merck-Medco's high-quality work force. As Merck-Medco continues to grow, Human Resources will play an important role in implementing programs that increase employee loyalty, help professionals fulfill their potential, reward top performers and create an enjoyable work environment.
Human Resources staff perform a variety of duties, depending on their position. While some professionals specialize in areas involving direct contact with employees or the public, a great many staff members contribute behind-the-scenes management, administrative and technical support. Typically, most open positions in Human Resources require experience, but entry-level opportunities do exist.
Like many departments at Merck-Medco, Human Resources uses a team approach to delivering its services. The department is organized into a number of Generalist Teams. Each team coordinates all Human Resources services for their assigned departments. Human Resources also includes several specialty areas called Centers of Excellence that provide key services in such areas as training, staffing, benefits and compensation. Experts from the Centers of Excellence support the efforts of the Generalist Teams and are consulted as needed by team members, depending on employee departmental needs.
Human Resources candidates should be able to communicate well with a cross-section of employees from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Comfort with technology is a must, as is the ability to work independently and to quickly grasp industry- or company-wide issues involving technical or medical topics.
